2021 Employer Survey Key Findings

HKU periodically surveys to gather employers’ feedback on HKU graduates’ job performance and achievement of educational aims. In the 2021 Survey on Opinions of Major Employers of Bachelor’s Degree HKU Graduates on Key Aspects of Performance and Achievement of HKU’s Educational Aims (the 2021 Employer Survey), organisations which had held recruitment activities at HKU or posted graduate job openings at CEDARS in the past three years were invited to participate in the survey.

Highlights of Findings

  • Overall, employers’ impression on HKU graduates was positive, with mean ratings (in a 5-point Likert scale) of 3.89 on Overall Performance of HKU Graduates and 3.94 on Satisfaction with the Quality of HKU Graduates.
  • Over half of respondents agreed that HKU graduates always / sometimes exceed the required standard on 54 out of the 57 aspects on job performance and job-related skills. The highest performance ratings centered on language proficiency.
  • Compared to the survey conducted in 2018 with the same focus (the 2018 Employer Survey), small increases in mean scores were found in most items, including attainments of HKU’s educational aims (Critical intellectual inquiry and life-long learning, Tackling novel situations and ill-defined problems, Critical self-reflection, greater understanding of others, and upholding personal and professional ethics, and Leadership and advocacy for the improvement of the human condition) as shown in Figure 1.
