Presenting at Learning & Teaching Expo 2017: Importance of data-driven decision making

This past December 14, 2017, T&LEMU Director Dr. Maggie Zhao presented a seminar entitled “Evidence Based Practice in Learning Assessment: Using Data for Improvement” at the 8th annual Learning & Teaching Expo at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Dr. Zhao’s talk focused on using student outcome assessment to support data-driven decision making for quality improvement of teaching and learning. Because institutions are required to demonstrate evidence on quality of teaching and learning, it is crucial to understand how to best measure the value that higher education institutions are adding to their students. She illustrated several examples at the institutional level, including how T&LEMU uses student data for quality assurance and enhancement, and shared an institution-wide study on the impact of the curriculum reform in Hong Kong on student learning. To wrap up, Dr. Zhao discussed challenges and recommendations in assessing student learning that school leaders can review in their strategic decision-making process of using data for continuous improvement.

With support from the education community across the Asia-Pacific region, the annual Learning & Teaching Expo provides a platform to share and discover new and innovative developments in teaching and learning resources. Participants include academics, school leaders, education buyers, governments and teachers, and T&LEMU enjoyed the opportunity to share knowledge on the value of educational data.
